. sandy knocked out the hospital's power, flooding then wiped out the fuel pumps in the basement, which were supposed to be fueling the generators. bottom of the hour, we'll talk to dr. sanjay gupta. he's got a live report for us from bellevue. john's got a lack at some of the other stories making news this morning. good morning. >> this morning, people in breezy point in queens are literally picking up the pieces of their lives. at least 110 neighborhood homes the burned in that massive fire during sandy. new york governor andrew cuomo toured the devastation yesterday. he spoke to victims and promised them the tight-knit community will rebuild. >>> we have some new developments is on stories we've been following this morning. the university of southern california has lifted a lockdown it put in place following a late-night shooting at a campus halloween party. the school department of public safety says shots were fired. following an argument between two men last night at usc's main campus in los angeles. one of the men was critically wounded. another three people were also shot. their
's bringing the northeast once again to its knees. thousands of superstorm sandy victims in new york and in new jersey enduring damaging winds and driving snow and bitter cold temperatures, all in the dark. as of 3:00 this morning, there are close to 700,000 customers in new york and new jersey, who don't have power. that number's rising. more than 1,500 flights have already been canceled, and just when service on the long island rail road was returning to normal, it was again suspended last night. team coverage of this early winter storm. susan candiotti is with us live from asbury park in new jersey. rob marciano is live in staten island, where they are reeling from last week's hurricane. so much damage there, rob. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, soledad. boy, they didn't need this. and we didn't actually expect to be this much snow. we knew there would be some snow, but not to the point where it was piling up. so this is an area where during the height of sandy, the storm surge was up and over my shoulders. so most of these homes, at least their first floor has been wiped
christmas tree but only briefly. they got back to the job at hand. let's check in now with sandy to see what is on radar tonight. >> we have spotty showers around the bay area but what is getting interesting is the snow that has been developing. let's go to the live doppler and around the ukiah area near the clear lake north of clear lake you look very carefully we have had some pink showing up. mixed precipitation east of the ukiah area and north of lake port so the mountains there getting some colder moving in. where we are getting showers rate now. around monterey it's coming down. it's light to moderate at this hour. watsonville very light returns. we are far from through as you look at this the wider picture here look at the lightning strike that we have been seeing just northwest of the bay area. they have been basically dissipating but we are seeing some lightning strike so keep it in mine. thunderstorm possibility in the poker. sierra nevada chain control on interstate 80. highway 50 state route 4 and 88. they are getting some snow so far half foot and counte counteding.
. five days after superstorm sandy, new york governor andrew cuomo said temporary fuel trucks will be deployed around the new york city area to alleviate the gas shortages. drivers will be able to fill up directly from the tankers. new yorkers can also get around the city a little easier now as well. >> 80% of the subway service has been restored. that is under literally, under one week, 80% of the subway service has been restored from what was horrendous damage. >> across the river in new jersey, there is gas rationing in 12 counties in an effort to cut don on wait times there. people have been waiting there in long lines for hours to gas up cars and get fuel for their generators. >> our jim clancy is in long beach, new jersey, which is on the jersey shore. it's very windy, and that cold front that is apparently going to move in this weekend, jim, give me an idea of what's happening there in terms of people trying to recover, pick up the pieces, move on, what? >> there's a major push going on long beach island today. they have brought in scores of heavy pieces of heavy equipm
on today. it's been nearly four days since superstorm sandy slammed into the east coast and this morning in many areas, it is still a dire situation. the death toll from the storm has been raised to 92 people in the u.s. 3.5 million customers along the eastern seaboard are still without power this morning. and the economic losses are just staggering. an estimated $30 billion to $50 billion. right now rescue agencies are trying to get food and water to those in need. gasoline, in very short supply in parts of new york and new jersey. long, long lines. now a common sight at many gas stations in the region. people waiting two, three, four hours to get to the pumps. sometimes just to find there's no gas left and yes anger is starting to spill over. some gas station owners have been closing their businesses to let tempers cool down. they're calling in police for help. it's not a good situation. homeland security secretary janet napolitano and top fema officials will visit staten island today to get a look at the devastation there caused by hurricane sandy. yesterday police found the bodies of

couple of weeks since the east coast ravaged by superstorm sandy. sints that sto since that storm hit, there's been an election, a standoff in florida's vote count, a damaging nor'easter, a potential fiscal cliff and a scandal at the top of the cia that forced the director to step down. and as you are learning all of this news and going about your life, a small community in eastern new york that was hammered by sandy has been waiting and waiting and waiting without power, without transportation, without food and in some cases without water. they have been waiting for help to arrive of any kind. it's unconscienable. victor blackwell is there. going into our third week now, how did these people, victor, fall through the cracks? >> reporter: it has not been very easy at all ashleigh. i just climbed up to the 14th floor to talk to mrs. doris hood. she has been here since the 28th and she walked down just once to vote. and then walked back up. she has no running water, she has no heat, no electricity, she has gas so she has her oven on and that's how she's keeping her apartment warm. we ha
